  1. Chap 1: Figure 1.15: Missing label for Domain Archaea.
  2. Chap 1: Figure 1.29: "In areas where coral snakes were present, most attacks were on artificial king snakes" -> "In areas where coral snakes were present, most attacks were on brown artificial snakes".
  3. Chap 2: Figure 2.13: "Sodium on" -> "Sodium ion".
  4. Chap 5 testbank question #24: "Polysaccharides, lipids, and proteins are similar in that they... B) are synthesized from monomers by dehydration reactions." Lipids are not made of monomers.
  5. Chap 5: Figure 5.4: H missing on Carbon 2 in abbreviated ring.
  6. Chap 6: Figure 6.24: "Outer doublets cross-linking proteins" -> "Cross-linking proteins". ... base of the "cilium" not "Cilium". "Plasma membrane" label missing upper right.
  7. Chap 6 testbank question #8: "Which of the following are prokaryotic cells?" This question is not addressed in this chapter
  8. Chap 8: "Energy Is the capacity to cause change" -> "Energy is the ability to do work".
  9. Chap 9:Figure 9.6 "Glycolsis" -> "Glycolysis".
  10. Chap 9: "Cells can still produce ATP through fermentation" is misleading. Fermentation itself does not produce ATP, but recycles NAD+ to for glycolysis to make ATP. Same mistake in Activity Fermentation.
    "Pyruvate is reduced directly to NADH to form lactate as a waste product" -> "Pyruvate is reduced directly by NADH to form lactate".
  11. Chap 9 testbank question #77: Fermentation takes place in the cytosol, not mitochondrial inner membrane.
  12. Chap 10: Fig 10.2: the label "c" is repeated, the 2nd should be "d", then "e".
    "The leaves of plants- Are the major sites of photosynthesis" is not true: most photosynthesis occurs in algae.
    "Chloroplasts split water into Hydrogen and oxygen, incorporating the electrons of hydrogen into sugar molecules": this misses the point: the main point about photosynthesis is carbon fixation, not water splitting.
    "The absorption spectra of three types of pigments in chloroplasts": carotenoids are found in chromoplasts, not chloroplasts.
  13. Chap 11: "Signal transduction pathways Convert signals on a cell’s surface into cellular responses": change "on a cell’s surface" to "external signals" since some signals can enter via junctions, bypassing the "surface".
  14. Chap 12: Figure 12.4: "Centrometers" -> "Centromeres".
  15. Chap 12: Figure 12.9: "patent cell" -> "parent cell".
    Figure 12.12: The "E" in "E. coli" should be italicized.
  16. Chap 12 testbank question #17: "If there are 20 centromeres in a cell at anaphase, how many chromosomes are there in each daughter cell following cytokinesis?" ANswer should be 10, not 20?
  17. Chap 14: "blue and yellow paints blend to make green" -> "cyan and yellow paints blend to make green". Avoid the distinction between "character:" and "trait" - much of the book uses these terms interchangeably.
    (14_LectureOutlines_LO.doc): "carpal" -> "carpel".
  18. Chap 15: "the white-eye mutant allele must be located on the X chromosome" -> "the white-eye mutant gene must be located on the X chromosome".
    "ova" -> "ovum" if singular. "16 Diploid" -> "32 Diploid" for haplo-dilpoid system.
  19. Figure 15.9: "22 + XY" should be "22 + X".
  20. Chap15: Figure 15.10: in the Punnett squares the female heterozygotes should be XX, not XY.
  21. Chap16: Figure 16.14: "DNA polymerase" label missing in box.
  22. Chap 18: "Binding of an inducer to an innately inactive repressor" -> "Binding of an inducer to an innately active repressor".
  23. Chap 18 Figure 18.22b:: "Allolactose, an isomer of lactose, derepresses the operon by inactivating the repressor." -> "Allolactose, an isomer of lactose, activates the operon by inactivating the repressor.".
  24. Chap 18 Figure 18.23b:: "When glucose levels in an E. coli cell increase CAP detaches from the lac operon, turning it off": the inactive CAP does not turn off the operon, the transcription just slows down.
  25. Chap 19: Figure 19.2: "Nucleosome (“bad”)" -> "Nucleosome (“bead”)".
    Figure 19.5: "primary transport" -> "primary transcript".
  26. Chap 21: Summary for Concept 21.3: "carpal" -> "carpel".
  27. Chap 24: The flightless cormorant (Nannopterum harrisi), "originated" on the Galápagos Islands: less misleading is to say "evolved".
  28. Chap 24: Figure 24.4: Garter snakes are a poor example of habitat isolation. Many terrestrial snakes can swim and meet aquatic ones.
  29. Chap 24: Figure 24.6: The two antelope squirrels are a poor example of allopatric speciation. There is no evidence the Harris and White-tailed are confined to opposite rims of the Grand Canyon, in fact there is considerable overlap of their ranges in SW Arizona. A better example are the Abert's and Kaibab Tassel-eared Squirrels.
  30. Chap 24 Self Quiz #8: "Mimulus lewisii and M. cardinalis are plants that do not hybridize in nature but can be readily crossed in the laboratory to produce fertile offspring. Which of the following is least likely to keep the gene pools of these two plants separate in nature?". Answer should not be "gametic incompatibility" but "different attractiveness to pollinators", see p. 474.
  31. Chap 25: "A paraphyletic clade": this is an oxymoron; a clade cannot be paraphyletic.
  32. Chap 25: Figure 25.10c: "common ancestor of (A) the species in the group" -> "common ancestor (A) of the species in the group".
  33. Chap 25: Figure 25.11: "0" and "1" missing in character table.
  34. Chap 25: Figure 25.12: "The length of a branch in a cladogram" -> "in a phylogram".
  35. Chap 26: "The oldest known fossils of eukaryotes" -> "The oldest known fossils of multicellular eukaryotes".
  36. Chap 27 testbank question #68: "What is the function of a bacterium's capsule?", "adhesion" and "protection" are both correct answers.
  37. Chap 28: "Due to an accessory pigment call" -> "called".
